Accrotool's Mark Roach Addresses NCDMM Seminar on Workforce Preparedness

March 28, 2011

Mark Roach, Accrotool's vice president of sales and marketing, recently spoke at the National Center for Defense Manufacturing & Machining (NCDMM) in Latrobe, PA. His gave his remarks, titled “Manufacturing Possibilities for Great Careers,” in conjunction with a visit by faculty from the National Defense University's Industrial College of the Armed Forces Manufacturing Industry Study Group. In his presentation, Mr. Roach called for renewed cooperation between industry and government to educate students and their families about the strong potential of careers in manufacturing. Through such efforts, Mr. Roach believes that industry can help ensure a steady supply of skilled workers who can design and build products which have military applications.

“Many people still look down on manufacturing careers as being 'dirty' and for people who can't cut it academically, but nothing could be further from the truth,” says Mr. Roach. “With increased use of computerized equipment and a growing need for teamwork on the shop floor, workers in manufacturing must have strong mathematical, technical and interpersonal skills. As equipment and processes become more complex, it's no longer possible to simply take someone off of the street and put him or her to work.”

Mr. Roach also called for increased cooperation between secondary and post-secondary schools, and manufacturers to give students a balance of classroom and practical experience before they choose career paths and begin working.
